Richard Smale - Director of Strategy & Transformation
Richard was appointed as the Director of Strategy and Transformation on 14 April 2020.
Richard began his career with the NHS in 1991 as a graduate trainee on the financial management programme. He has worked for a community provider in Plymouth and spent nine years at the RUH in Bath, during which time he had roles as a Directorate Accountant, General Manager and Head of IT Services. After two years working for a health consultancy firm, Richard returned to the NHS leading on the reconfiguration of services across Bristol, North Somerset and South Gloucestershire (BNSSG).
Following the 2013 reforms, Richard spent seven years developing the transformation services provided by South Central and West CSU, providing support to a range of NHS organisation and systems across England.
Richard is passionate about the improvement of health and care services and addressing the wider determinants of health. He has studied both organisational development and quality improvement and is a Teaching Associate on the Quality, Service Improvement and Redesign (QSIR) Programme. He also provides mentoring support to a range of NHS colleagues.
Richard lives in Keynsham, is married, has three grown up children and a springer spaniel. Outside of work he coaches young children to play football, has joined the local walking football team and enjoys traveling around in a converted VW Transporter.
